In November 2012, I was accepted into the Bike and Build Non-Profit Organization. During the summer of 2013, I will be biking with a group of young adults across the country from North Carolina to San Diego. Along the way, I will be working with affordable housing projects, both raising awareness and actually helping to build houses. This adventure is 10 weeks long and covers over 3,000 miles. As you can imagine, this takes a great deal of funding. In order to be a part of this trip, I have a $4,500 fundraising goal I must achieve.

This will be the 10th year for Bike and Builders to make the trek across the country. The past 9 seasons of cross-country Bike and Build tours have collectively raised $3.3 million for affordable housing by each rider raising this $4,500 goal before leaving the East Coast starting point. While this seems like an enormous amount of money, it is merely a drop in the bucket for what is necessary to help nearly 9.5 million Americans who struggle with not being able to afford reasonable, or even inhabitable, living situations. As my team progresses across the United States, we will stop once a week to join in on a local affordable housing building group. These jobs can range from a single day to a full week. Along the way, our nights will be spent much like many of those who need our help - camping outside or staying in churches and schools who generously offer to host us.
